Carbondale is a town in the Roaring Fork Valley that prides itself on its individuality. It is a distinctive mix of cultures from all walks of life. In addition to skiing, winter activities near Carbondale include cross-country skiing, dog sledding, snowmobiling, snowshoeing/skinning, ice fishing and ice skating.

Summers are when residents of Carbondale really enjoy the mountain life. There's endless hiking and biking trails, horseback riding, fly fishing, kayaking, stand-up paddle boarding, rafting, swimming and canoeing. Gold Medal fishing waters are only a few miles away in Basalt, where the Roaring Fork River and the Fryingpan River converge. There are also countless summer events and festivals you can attend, like the popular Farmers' Market, where local growers sell their tasty wares, or the annual Potato Day Celebration in early October at Sopris Park that has been greeting revelers for more than a century.

• Carbondale is on the Roaring Fork Transit Authority bus line, so it's easy to get around. You can catch a bus in downtown Carbondale and ride it all the way to the ski slopes and back. It's also convenient for trips downvalley to Glenwood Springs for shopping at the mall and big-box stores.
