Rifle & Antlers | Garfield County

Rifle and Antlers are two communities between Silt and Parachute that have beautiful and affordable real estate for sale. There are homes for sale in the town of Rifle and more rural properties on the outskirts of town, or just east in the unincorporated community of Antlers. A bit removed from the Rocky Mountain ski resorts of Vail, Aspen, Steamboat Springs and Glenwood Springs, real estate in Rifle and Antlers is much more affordable.

Real estate in Rifle and Antlers consists of mostly older homes that are under $500,000.The median home price is about $275,000. There are several homes in the $250,000 to $350,000 range. Newer homes with updated amenities and/or a nice location can increase the price closer to $500,000. Residences under $250,000 are usually smaller, or in need of improvements. Homes with a $500,000 price tag typically have high-end finishes and a sizable lot. Luxury homes in town can reach the $1 million mark.

The Antlers community is just east of Rifle. Antlers is a rural area and homes are spread out on larger lots. Silt Mesa Road is a main road near Antlers that runs east and west. North-south roads in Antlers are Peterson Lane, Miller Lane and Harvey Gap Road. These roads go further into the mountains but are only a few minutes from downtown Rifle or the town of Silt just to the east.

Rifle Creek Reservoir and Rifle Creek Reservoir are located a few miles north of Rifle on County Road 325. Harvey Gap Road leads to Harvey Gap State Park, where there is a pristine, 200-acre lake - Grass Valley Reservoir - that has excellent fishing year round and limited-use boating.

Situated along Interstate 70 and the Colorado River, Rifle is just east of the prominent Roan Plateau. The plateau is visible to the west from town. Rifle has some historic roots, founded in 1882 and incorporated in 1905, and there are a few historic and vintage homes in the town core.

  • The historic core of Rifle is north of Interstate 70 and the Colorado River. Colorado Highway 6 is north of the river and is on the south edge of town. Whiteriver Avenue is the main north-south street in town, along with Railroad Avenue and Park Avenue. Prefontaine Avenue is a main north-south road further west. Rifle High School is on Prefontaine Avenue. To the east, Birch Avenue off of East 7th Street is near some nice parks, and Mile Pond Road leads northeast out of town.

  • Rifle is an important cattle ranching hub for the Western Slope of Colorado, mostly due to the arid climate of the area. Farming is also a sustainable lifestyle here, as there is enough rain to farm the land without the need for irrigation. The sufficient precipitation provides ample pasture lands for various breeds of cattle and sheep to graze.

  • Rifle sits in the eastern portion of the Piceance Basin, home to several different fossil fuels, including oil shale. Over the years, the local economy has seen periods of great expansion, but more recently, oil and gas drilling on top of the plateau - called the Bookcliffs - has been stymied.
